video sales letter masterclass
A Video Sales Letter (VSL) is basically a regular sales letter that is turned into a video...
But with a good VSL, there's a lot more going on than meets the eye.
A lot of psychology and persuasion is going on "behind the scenes."
Some VSLs are plain and basic-looking. They look like plain slides with text on them, with a voice reading the words out loud.
Other VSLs are more sophisticated, showing a presenter onscreen, with graphics and animation.
Both types can be extremely effective. The true power of every successful VSL lies in the strength of the copywriting and the offer.
So should you create a VSL for your sales page, or use a regular “text” sales letter?
Here's what I advise: when you launch your offer, begin with a text sales letter.
See how it does. Keep tweaking it and improving it.
Once you feel you've got a winning sales letter, it's worth putting in the time and effort to turn it into a simple VSL.
All you need are Powerpoint slides matched to a voiceover. You can include images on some of the slides to add a bit of visual flair, but nothing fancy.
Most likely, even a basic-looking VSL will improve your conversions and generate more sales.
Why are VSLs usually more effective than a text sales letter? It comes down to two big reasons:
1. With a VSL, you’re making the viewer consume your sales message in two ways: they're reading the words onscreen, and listening to it, at the same time. This way, your words and your message can really sink in.
2. With a VSL, you're forcing people learn about your offer at YOUR pace. You'll hide the controls on your video player so that they can’t fast-forward.
You don't talk about your product, or the price, until later in the VSL. This allows you to take the viewer through a series of steps that push certain "emotional triggers" and get them ready to make a purchase.
This is a lot different than having them read a text sales letter, where at any time they can scroll down through it and skip over important parts. (A lot of people just want to see how much the product costs...)
But with a VSL, you withhold this information until you've got them bursting with curiosity and EAGER to find out how they can get their hands on this amazing
With a well-written VSL, you aren't allowing them to skip ahead. You can walk them through a series of steps and use a variety of persuasion techniques.
You also tell an engaging STORY about how you (or someone you know) once struggled with this same problem, until they discovered the solution (which you then introduce as your product.)
The most effective VSLs use a certain structure, which I explain in the walkthrough video.
You walk the viewer through a series of steps, such as...
You grab their attention and create curiosity with a compelling intro...
You identify their problem, and "twist the knife" to make them really FEEL how much this problem is hurting or frustrating them...
You mention other so-called "solutions" they may have tried in the past, which didn't fix their problem...
You "tease" them with the promise of a NEW solution which DOES work, and you describe all of the benefits it will give them (but they'll need to keep watching to find out what it is...)
You tell a story about how you (or someone you know) used to suffer from the same problem, until they discovered this unique and incredibly effective new solution...
And then you present your product as this solution, and make it feel like an irresistible deal they'd be crazy to turn down.
Along the way, good VSLs use a variety of persuasion tactics to keep the viewer engaged, to build "rapport" (making the viewer feel that you understand and relate to them), to build trust, and to neutralize their "objections" - the reasons going through their mind why they should NOT take you up on this offer.
I explain it all in the walkthrough video.
No matter the topic of your product, you can apply these lessons and tactics when you create your own VSL, and supercharge your conversions.
